Roofing Materials

Loft insulation roll calculator

Estimate whole insulation rolls from the loft areas you measure, the roll coverage you check and any extra allowance you choose.

Start with what you can measure. For a product figure, use the label or product page. Your practical estimate appears first; the technical detail sits below it.

Loft areas

Add each part of the loft floor you measured. Use the Area calculator if you need help with a simple length × width measurement. Measure the loft floor, not the roof slope.

Roll coverage and extra allowance

Check the usable coverage on the exact roll or product sheet you are considering. If different rolls have different coverages, calculate them separately.

What this does not cover: Materials estimate only — it counts whole rolls from measurements, coverage and allowance you enter. It does not choose or assess insulation thickness, layers, existing or target depth, U/R/lambda values, thermal performance, heat loss, savings, product type or suitability, structural work, joists, roof or eaves, ventilation, condensation, moisture, fire or acoustic performance, services, installation, Building Regulations, Part L or compliance.

Where the numbers come from

A quick guide to this estimate.

  • You enterMeasured loft sections, explicit area deductions, roll coverage and the choices you make in this form.
  • You can change:The loft-section measurements, explicit area deductions and extra allowance you choose (including zero).
  • From the product details you enterUsable coverage shown for the one roll you are considering.
  • Worked out hereWe total only the included loft areas after deductions, add your allowance, divide by the roll coverage and round up to whole rolls.

Measuring tips

What to measure

Add each part of the loft you have measured once. Use an area you already know or measured length × width, then take away only explicit areas that will not receive the insulation. This tool does not work out roof geometry or decide how insulation should be fitted.

Worked example

See it in practice

A 24 m² measured loft area less a 1 m² hatch surround leaves 23 m². With no extra allowance, a chosen roll that covers 6.5 m² gives 3.538 rolls and rounds up to 4 whole rolls. Those rolls cover 26 m², leaving 3 m² surplus coverage after the measured requirement.

Keep a noteWrite down the exact roll and usable coverage shown on its label or product sheet, so you can check it later.

Before you buy

Three quick checks

  1. 01

Check the usable coverage on the exact roll or product sheet you are considering; coverage can vary.

  2. 02

Keep every included loft section and area deduction visible so you can recheck it.

  3. 03

Check thickness, layers, ventilation, services, installation and compliance separately; this tool only counts material coverage.

Quick answers

Useful to know

How do I work out how many loft insulation rolls I need?

Add the loft areas you measured, take away any explicit areas that will not receive the insulation, enter the usable coverage shown for one chosen roll and choose any extra allowance. The calculator divides the coverage needed by that roll coverage and rounds up to whole rolls.

What roll coverage should I enter?

Use the usable coverage shown on the label or product sheet for the roll you are considering. Different products and roll types can cover different areas, so this calculator does not supply a default.

Can I add more than one loft section?

Yes. Add each separately measured loft area with a useful label. You can leave a section visible but exclude it from the estimate, and you can add an explicit measured area deduction within an included section.

Does this tell me what insulation thickness or layers to use?

No. It counts whole rolls from the coverage you enter. It does not select or assess thickness, layers, existing or target depth, thermal performance, product suitability, ventilation, moisture, installation or compliance.

Method and checks

Last checked 18 October 2026 · review again by 18 October 2027. The method version is available in the detail below.

The calculation steps and rounding are shown and have been checked. Before buying, check the coverage, pack size or other product detail you entered.

Keep in mind: loft-insulation roll purchase-quantity estimate only; not insulation, thermal, installation or compliance advice. This remains a planning estimate, not a design or approval.

Details that can vary: No roll coverage, allowance, insulation thickness, layers or thermal value is supplied by Calculator.Shop.
